A little bit spooky and super cute Halloween monster truffles that will make everyone smile. But don’t be fooled by their friendly appearance; they are still monsters, and they are scarily spicy. Or as spicy as you choose to make them.
Why will you love these Halloween monster truffles?
If you are a fan of spicy chocolate, you will love these truffles. Despite being made of cookie crumbs, they are not dry at all. They have a soft and pleasant texture when served at room temperature, and their unique blend of ingredients gives them a luxurious taste. But still, they are super quick and easy to make. You can start preparing them a few hours before the party, and they will be ready just in time. Most of the preparation time is simply waiting until these little monsters get chilled in the fridge.
You can easily create different monster characters by using eye sprinkles of different sizes, adding different numbers of eyes, and varying the space between them. I picked the simplest possible covering option. There’s no need to dip them in melted chocolate: the truffles are covered in cookie crumbs that instantly stick to the freshly mixed truffle mixture and make the monsters look furry, which is a nice touch.
Halloween monster truffles ingredient notes
Chocolate cookie crumbs are the base for these truffles and the reason why they are so quick and easy to make.
The melted butter and chocolate add richness and act as a glue for the cookie crumbs as they harden in the refrigerator.
Sweetened condensed milk also thickens in the refrigerator, so it gives some gluing power, but without adding too much richness. It also carries most of the sweetness.
Coffee is an important ingredient that contributes to both the flavor and texture of the truffles. It deepens the chocolate flavor and adds a luxurious note without making the truffles taste exclusively like coffee. Additionally, coffee moistens the cookie crumbs, creating a pleasantly soft texture.
Ground cardamom pairs well with coffee and chocolate. It adds an extra touch of luxury to the flavor, so don’t skip it!
Chili powder adds character, creating a final note of flavor. I’ve included an amount in the recipe that makes the truffles noticeably, yet modestly, spicy. Feel free to increase the amount if you enjoy spicy food or want to surprise your guests.

To decorate
- 80 g / 2.8 simple chocolate cookies

Directions
1.
Prepare coffee and let it cool down to room temperature.
2.
Crush the cookies in a blender or food processor until you have fine crumbs. Set aside some of the crumbs for decoration, then transfer the rest to a mixing bowl.
3.
Melt the butter and chocolate together in a saucepan over low heat.
4.
Pour the melted chocolate and butter over the cookie crumbs, add sweetened condensed milk, coffee, and spices.
5.
Mix until the mixture comes together and resembles cookie dough. Taste the mixture to see if the spiciness level is to your liking. If you prefer it spicier, add a bit more chili powder.
6.
Scoop the mixture and squeeze each portion with your hands to ensure everything sticks together well. Then, shape the mixture into balls.
7.
Press the eye sprinkles into the balls.
8.
Roll the balls in dry cookie crumbs. The crumbs will stick to the wet truffles. Then, clean up the excess crumbs from the monsters’ eyes.
9.
Let the little monsters chill in the refrigerator for about an hour or until they solidify.
10.
Monster truffles taste best when served at room temperature.
Extra tips for success
- Because chili powder can vary in spiciness, make sure to taste the truffle mixture before shaping it. Add more if you want it spicier.
- If you are making these truffles for kids or simply prefer that way, you can use decaffeinated coffee and skip the chili powder.
- These truffles need to chill in the refrigerator to solidify, but let them get back to room temperature before serving. It might sound strange, but they need time in the fridge for the mixture to hydrate and the flavors to mingle. Also, the truffles will hold their shape better when warmed up if they are chilled first.
